High quality black tea, originating from Sri Lanka.

This black tea originates from the town of Nuware Eliya, in the hilly region of the central province of Sri Lanka. Nuware Eliya is located at an altitude of about 1800m and is a very famous location for tea production. Due to its mountainous location, Nuwara has a specific climate. It does not have a pronounced dry season, and has a subtropical mountain climate. High altitude in combination with low temperature gives teas with exceptional taste and aroma.

Frost may form during the winter. However, it heats up easily during the day due to exposure to the sun. Teas from this mountainous region are considered some of the world’s best orange pekoa (OP) teas. Orange Pekoe is a classification of black tea. In order for the tea to be classified as OP, it must be made exclusively from young buds and the first two youngest leaves.

Why exactly the name Orange Pekoe, cannot be said with certainty. But there are the most common guesses, ie stories, such as:

Pekoe (pek-ho) comes from the Chinese term for tea, which refers to the tiny silvery soft hairs on the youngest leaves.

Orange originates from the Dutch ruling monarchy “House of Orange”. Because the Netherlands was among the first countries to import and export tea from China.
