Bancha tea

-Bancha-

This is a green tea with low caffeine content and high calcium content. Bancha tea has a mild taste with grassy and fresh notes.

How is Bancha made?

In order to make it, leaves are picked from the lower part of the stem, i.e. older leaves (as appose to  Sencha,  which is obtained from harvesting the first leaves). Bancha tea is processed the same way as Sencha and most other Japanese green teas. Steaming the leaves , the roll them and dry them.

The name consists of:

  • Ban – which means “late tea” – harvested later (it is a second, third and sometimes even  fourth harvest, depending on the producer). Ban also means “daily tea”, implying that this tea is for drinking every day, throughout the day.
  • Cha – meaning tea

This tea is perfect for drinking throughout the day, because of its low caffeine content. And you can even drink it in the evening (except if you react to even the smallest amounts of caffeine).

In addition to its mild taste, it is also gentle on the stomach, compared to some other green teas. It helps with digestion in some people.
